Sunday 2 May 2010

First thing this morning the sky was grey and threatening, and within the hour rain started to fall, only light at first, but it soon turned much heavier, forcing me to abandon my walk. I didn't get over to the College grounds, and only quickly did a circuit of Migrant Alley, where at least I had the good fortune to hear, if not see, a YELLOW WAGTAIL (52) go over. Also of note on the sheep pasture were 98 STARLINGS, all busy collecting food for thier young, back at the nest. A SKYLARK got up and sung, despite the cold wind and rain.

Only 42 species were seen today, with species like the Jay, Coal Tit, and Cuckoo not being recorded, but a Nuthatch (53) seen in a large Oak on the footpath between the Wet Woods and the lake, was another addition to the months list.

Apart from that it was a very disappointing May day, with the rain lasting right through into the afternoon, lets hope for better tomorrow!

Your weather sounds like our weather to start May off. I'm continually amazed by how many species you can turn up in the rain! Yesterday's wind and rain made it tough birding for me.

Hi Warren.
A bad day all round for most people. Well done with what you did see. 42 species is good for a grotty day.
