Monday 15 June 2015

The day started grey, cool and misty again, but by 10:30hrs the sun broke through, leaving the rest of the day fine and warm .

I made another full patch walk this morning, finding 47 species on the 5 and a half hour visit, I didn't find any additions to the years 'successfully bred' list, but did add another 7 species to the months list. The missed regularly seen species of ROOK (46), BULLFINCH (47), LONG TAILED TIT (48) and BUZZARD (49) that went unrecorded yesterday, were picked up, plus a few not so regular species like the TURTLE DOVE (50), which I was very pleased to see a pair of in the Scrubby Woods. Flyovers from CORMORANT (51) and more surprisingly 4 LAPWING (52) take the June list into the 50's.

I had a closer look at the KESTREL nest box this morning, but could see no sign of young and only saw the female Kestrel once as it hunted over the Greenhouse Grounds, maybe they have failed in their breeding attempt this year?

Early this afternoon I went out to look around the Greenhouse Grounds for Dragonflies and Butterflies, finding my first Emperor Dragonfly of the year, it didn't stop for a photo though! I also saw my first Common Blue Butterfly and Meadow Brown Butterfly of the year, but again they didn't hang about for a photo.

Just as well I took some butterfly images in Wales, these will brighten the post!

Glad you had some good additions to the month's list. Great butterfly photos. But how can you tell the pearl from the dark green?

Wilma,
The Dark Green has subtly different black markings on the wing, and has a green wash on the underwing, plus it is a bit bigger :-)
