Tuesday 5 October 2010

It was raining when I left for work this morning, it was raining when I walked home at dinner time, and it rained on into the afternoon, not a day to be out and about!

I did spend a short while at Migrant Alley as I walked home from work though, I stood in the rain counting STARLINGS, GOLDFINCH'S and LINNETS - I must be mad! My madness showed that there were 343 Starlings and a combined flock of 83 Goldfinch and Linnets, with a probable bias of 70 - 30 in favour of Goldfinch. I scanned the birds in hope of something different amongst them, maybe a Brambling, or Redpoll, but I gave up in the end as my binocular lenses eventually got too wet too see out of :-(

I spend the rest of the day watching the Garden Feeders, where despite the attentions of a pair of SPARROWHAWKS quite a few species visited, albeit in low numbers, here's the peak numbers of the species that came in.

GREENFINCH - 10
Goldfinch - 3
CHAFFINCH - 4
BLUE TIT - 7
GREAT TIT - 5
HOUSE SPARROW - 10
ROBIN - 1
COLLARED DOVE - 6
WOOD PIGEON - 4
GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER - 1
COAL TIT - 2
MARSH TIT - 1
GOLDCREST - 1
NUTHATCH - 2

Birds noted flying over were :-

SWALLOW
HOUSE MARTIN
JACKDAW
CARRION CROW
MAGPIE
JAY
GREEN WOODPECKER
Starling
PIED WAGTAIL
MALLARD

Not a bad little haul, 26 species, but nothing outstanding for the month. Tomorrows weather looks no better, so it's wait and see if I get out :-)

Sorry for the rain, we had it as well, but it started to get sunny about 1.30pm. You'll be the first when the sun comes out.

It's looking bad tomorrow Warren. But getting better and probably a good weekend. Trouble is i'm away in Dorset this weekend sitting by the River Avon but i'll have my bins and camera with me, just in case.

Warren,

Its forecast to be nice and sunny and up to 22 degrees on Friday and over the weekend - try and enjoy it and don't get too hot.

P.S. Had a lovely ring-tail Hen Harrier 'smorning.

Well 26 species in your garden is a really good number, see the positive side mate ;-)

It was quite nice here today but you probably didn't want to know that :)

That was a jolly good garden count and I'm envious as always of the GSW, Goldcrest, Marsh Tit and Nuthatch!
