Another pittswood Sunrise
This mornings full patch walk was undertaken in some lovely Autumn weather, which no doubt helped in the finding of the 48 species that were recorded, a good species total for October  :-)
Sunshine streaming through the canopy over at the Scrubby Woods
In that tally of 48 species were some interesting birds too, with my first LESSER REDPOLL (57) of the Autumn going on the daylist early on, as 3 birds flew NW. SISKIN were another Autumn bird recorded, 3 small groups of 4-6 birds, plus a few singles were recorded flying over, but one did stay to feed with some GOLDFINCH'S at the Greenhouse Grounds. One of the awaited winter thrush species also arrived this morning, a flock of 22, then 13 REDWING (58) were seen going over Migrant Alley, plus the odd single also passed through. They have arrived just two days earlier than the 11 year median average date.

Just 2 SWALLOWS were noted, they were at the College Stables, maybe this will be the final sighting of them this year, last year the last was seen on the 9th Oct, the only other summer species left on my patch are the CHIFFCHAFFS two were present at the Greenhouse Grounds.

Other notable species seen today, included my first sighting this month of one of the local PEREGRINES (59) over Migrant Alley, where 2 SKYLARKS were also seen, a LITTLE OWL called from the Greenhouse Copse, 5 MEADOW PIPITS were at the Tree Nursery, and the COOT remains on the lakes, which almost attracted a passing CORMORANT down, BUZZARD, SPARROWHAWK, and KESTREL made the raptor count for the morning up to four.

A few bits and pieces made an effort for the camera today  :-)

Lovely sunshine shot through the trees, very artistic.

Thanks Marc,
One of those photo's where a wider angle lens may have been more of use :-)

Some really lovely shots there Warren, the Chiffy shots are great. I was hoping for Redwing today but no sign, though a Brambling in with the many Chaffinch flocks was nice.

Alan,
I would have taken the Brambling if given the choice :-)

Lucky to have so much light now ;-) It's getting dark and cold over here now, with harmful weather.... Beautiful chiffchaff pictures Warren and nice counting in this month... I've seen 96 species this year, one mroe than my best record in 2010!
