A bit of bird news from yesterday evening. A much needed boost to the July list was had whilst scanning over the Greenhouses and Migrant Alley from my bedroom window, a very welcome lone LAPWING (58) went over.

Lapwings are not often seen on my patch outside of the winter months, so I was very surprised to see two more on the Sheep pasture at Migrant Alley as I walked into work this morning.

After work, I tried to brave the heat of another very warm and sticky day, I went over to the Lakeside scrub area, at least here there was some opportunity for some shade, last week I was sheltering from the wind!

It turned out to be hopeless for bird spotting, as I had expected really, most of the sensible creatures were resting up out of the heat. There were plenty of butterflies though, Purple Hairstreak, Large and Small Whites, Large Skippers, Peacock, Red Admiral, Speckled Wood, Comma, Small Tortoiseshell, and Meadow Brown all were on the wing.

After 90mins, I succumbed to the heat, and went back home to seek some shelter - what a wimp! At least Ive got the Lapwing on the months list, and the list is now equal to that of 2004, this is the year that has the distinction of having the lowest July bird total, so one more species this month will take me above that :-).

I didn't get any pics today - I gave the butterflies a rest, I expect you're all fed up with those now :-). Instead, i've dug out this Lapwing photo from my archives, this one was enjoying some cooler conditions :-)

I also found this Photo from exactly 7 months ago, oh for a quick walk through that again..........

Warren, which photos have you chosen from your hot summer collection to post up during the winter when it's too cold? :-) Plenty of time to knock July 2004 in to a cocked hat I think mate.

Goodness, I feel quite chilly now! Hope they have cooled you down too.

I think you are getting too used to seeing those Purple Hairstreaks :)

Warren,

I see the wife is back.

I'm also not going to react to the snow photos, I've just come back from doing a WEBS count on the marsh in blistering heat and boy was it lovely. Men and boys I think the term is.

I do believe I will save my weather complaints for the cold, dark, winter months. Although the snow scenes were good reminders of why I like it hot! Keep the butterfly photos coming, they are always lovely to look at>

cheers,
Wilma
