Saturday 3 July 2010

The first full patch walk of July was only an average affair, the hot weather continues to affect everything, and by 07:30 it was hot enough to drive the sensible creatures into cover. Me, not being sensible, continued on my 4 hour visit, recording 45 species in the process, only one of which wasn't recorded in the past two afternoon visits, that being a PHEASANT (48).

Apart from that, highlights were few and far between. A new pair of SPOTTED FLYCATCHERS were seen in the field of Oak Trees that lies off Ashes Lane, and a recently fledged TURTLE DOVE was seen in the scrub at the north end of Migrant Alley, a short Skywatch there didn't reveal a single raptor, but BLACK HEADED, HERRING and 5 LESSER BLACK BACKED GULLS were seen going over.

Apart from that, nothing had changed from the past two visits - not a very promising start to the new month :-) I still await the sighting of a Mistle Thrush, and Grey Heron, these two being the last of the regular species that can be counted on this month.

I didn't do too well with the camera either, just this Juv. SWALLOW was photographed, at the College Stables

Well done for sticking to the routine in these conditions. A liitle moisture might bring a few more out into the open.

Well, I love these two shots of the juveniles swallow. It is the same here, looks like the season is already finished and it is hard to see any bird at all! Not a single nice picture were taken tonight!

An unsettled week ahead Warren, might stir things up. But then again, we both know the weather forecasters often get it wrong.
