Wednesday 7 December 2011

Still relatively little to be seen here birdwise, I did my usual winter walk this afternoon, over to the lakes via the Small Holding and Wet Woods, then onto the Pub Field and Tree Nursery. A KINGFISHER was seen on the far side of the main lake, sitting amongst the cover of the overhanging trees, I only saw it as I scanned the bank to count the MOORHENS, of which just 3 were seen. Four pairs of MALLARD were also on the main lake, with 3 pairs on the small lake, but not a thing was on the Ornamental lake. A few BULLFINCH, REDWING, SONGTHRUSH and BLACKBIRDS were in the Scrubby Woods, and 8 FIELDFARE flew over whilst I was in there, a COAL TIT called from an Oak tree but I couldn't see it.

The Pub Field provided the only other piece of interest this afternoon, when a huge ( for my patch) flock of LAPWING were seen on it, I counted over 300, but I was scanning through the hedgerow, so as not to put them to flight, therefore not all the field was viewable and some birds were probably missed. With them were 18 BLACK HEADED GULLS, but no sign of a Common Gull for the month.

With only 24 days left until the end of the year, I don't think the record year list of 113 species, set last year, is in any danger of falling, and the months list is already stalling too, however, Ive got lots of holiday towards the end of the month, and who knows with a change in the weather and more early morning visits, that could all change  :-)

I'm only on 93 species for my patch bird list this year (I finished 2010 on 96)

hi Jase,

I'm always pleased to get to 100 in any year, ive been exceptionally lucky in the past few years, passing that mark every year since 2008 :-)

This month is always hard work but there could still be the odd surprise :-)

Never mind, you've not reached the total of last year, but, it's there to break next year.

As you know, Warren, this weather`s not helping in any way. Strong winds up here today, made for an even poorer outcome.
