The mornings wind and rain lasted into and throughout the afternoon, making for another miserable summers day, and stopped any thought of a patch visit, the only birds I noted today were the KESTREL family, seen as I walked to and from work, plus a CARRION CROW in my garden this afternoon, feeding on an apple, a scarce bird at the feeders !  Thats it for today   :-(
Here's the last of the photo's from my blog folder, they were taken yesterday afternoon, anyone want to identify the first insect? looks like a fly posing as a bee  :-)
Unidentified Fly - Turns out to be a Hoverfly - Volucella Bombylans, thanks to Greenie for the id   :-)

Yep the weather has been pants up here today too Warren. Fortunately I managed to get some sunshine for an hour or so on the patch yesterday!

Hi Warren, It could very easily be confused with a bee!

A dreadful day again here yesterday. The National Trust have said the effect on wildlife is 'almost apocalyptic'!!! I really hope that turns out to be an exaggeration...but already it is known that 90% of Puffins have been lost on Brownsman Island :-(

Apocalyptic, just about sums it up Songbird, especially for the insect feeding birds :-(

Your hover is as Greenie says V. bombylans variety plunata. Keep your eyes peeled for the red tailed bee mimicing V.bombylans var. bombylans probably be(e) around somewhere nearby.

Cheers
