Wednesday 5 September 2012

I only had a couple of hours out this afternoon, as I'm pushed for time today, hence this earlier than normal post for today.

I did the same circuit as the last few days this afternoon, that being a walk through the Tree Nursery, on to the Pub Field, out to Migrant Alley and finishing up at the Greenhouse Grounds, I found it to be a little more interesting today though, the Tree Nursery had a few LINNETS and 3 GREEN WOODPECKERS, plus a flock of a dozen or so GOLDFINCH in it, while the Pub Field barley stubble is not attracting much apart from WOODPIGEONS, there was at least a tick for the months list also found there - a PHEASANT (57).

Migrant Alley was for the most part quiet, it being exposed to the full glare of the sunshine, but this makes it attractive to the insects, which in turn bring the likes of the passage WHEATEAR to feed on them, just one was seen, but they are one of my favourite passage birds  :-)
Fence lines at Migrant Alley - all potential migrant perches!
Two KESTRELS were also hunting over the paddocks and pasture, a BUZZARD was seen going low over, and couple of Gulls that also flew over turned out to be BLACK HEADED GULLS (58), another tick for the month  :-)

A search through the Greenhouse Grounds, and a look over the Raspberry dump only produced one summer species today, that was a couple of CHIFFCHAFFS, the only other summer species seen this afternoon were a few local SWALLOWS. It's frustrating having to work all morning, who knows what I'm missing at this exciting time of year!
Todays Wheatear - What smart birds they are :-)

This Southern Hawker Dragonfly was seen at the run off pool over at the Tree Nursery

Warren ,
Really nice Wheatear shots .
But I'm afraid your Emperor Dragonfly is in fact a male Southern Hawker .
