Sunday 8 February 2015

This morning began with a slight frost under clear skies, then long, sunny periods were had throughout the day, making it feel warm out of the breeze  :-)

I spent 5 hours out on my patch, carrying out another full patch walk, finding a brilliant total of 50 species, that's quite some going for a February day, alas, none were new for the month or years list, where are those Siskins and Redpolls?

Small flocks of both REDWING and FIELDFARE were seen over the area, one such such flock of about 40 birds, at the Ashes lane Field, was joined by the MISTLETHRUSH pair again. The Wet Woods and Scrubby was gave up all that could be expected today, with many species openly displaying and chasing about, JAY, STOCK DOVE, GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER, GREEN WOODPECKER, NUTHATCH, TREECREEPER, BULLFINCH, COAL TIT, LONG TAILED TIT, and GOLDCREST being the pick of those.

On the lakes 11 CANADA GEESE and the white farmyard goose had arrived overnight, splitting themselves between the main lake and small lake, more of a surprise was seeing the immature MUTE SWAN had also turned up on the main lake, the adults were on the ornamental lake, along with 8 MALLARDS, 6 MOORHEN and the lone COOT, but I also saw the KINGFISHER there today.

Over at the Greenhouse Grounds the KESTREL pair were back, after their two day absence, there were also 5 MEADOW PIPITS, 3 more Bullfinch, two being females and the GREY WAGTAIL of note, one of the two females gave me a distant image.

A LITTLE OWL was at the Greenhouse Copse and during a short skywatch from my seat at Migrant Alley, I had views of 4 BUZZARDS up together, plus a fly over SPARROWHAWK and single SKYLARK and YELLOWHAMMER.
