Monday 10 February 2014

I was late out again this morning, waiting for the rain to ease off, which it did about 08:30hrs, at least it wasn't windy though  :-). I saw both the KESTRELS along Ashes Lane as I made my way to the Ashes Lane Field, which was holding more water than ever now, it looked good for some sort of water to fly up from the large puddles there, but only PHEASANT and SKYLARK were seen.

The rain started up again as I entered the Wet Woods, here I heard a TREECREEPER sing, and watched a pair of MANDARIN DUCK swim off into deeper cover, they may nest in there again this year, hopefully!

Over on the lakes the hoped for Grey Heron was not forth coming, a KINGFISHER was though, just 2 of the GOOSANDER remained on the main lake, both females. I checked the ornamental lake, where I gave the MUTE SWAN pair some bread, the COOT pair came over and stole a bit too, MALLARDS and MOORHENS made up the rest of what was on the water.

With the rain continuing to fall, my enthusiasm dwindled, however I did summon up enough to visit the Greenhouse Grounds and have a scan over Migrant Alley, seeing MEADOW PIPIT, PIED WAGTAIL, GREEN WOODPECKER, 2 HERRING GULLS, and the regulars of WREN, DUNNOCK, ROBIN, BLACKBIRD, SONGTHRUSH, GOLDFINCH, BLUE and GREAT TIT all foraging among the piles of discarded raspberry canes. The LITTLE OWL in the Greenhouse Copse was joined by its partner today, nice to see two together.

The rain came on heavy, and another patch visit came to a premature end, looks like this week will see more interrupted patch walks, due to stormy weather :-(

As has been the case for most of this month the camera stayed at home, so all I have to offer are images of garden birds, snatched during any brighter spells that appeared during yesterday and this afternoon, I hope you like Long tailed Tits!
