Thursday 13 August 2015

On a day of lively thunderstorms and dark skies that were more like December, very little opportunity was had to get out on patch.

I did manage an hour out around 09:00hrs, which I spent walking a circuit of Migrant Alley in some light rain, where very little was seen, just a few flyover HERRING GULLS and a fed up looking KESTREL on one of the electricity pylons, but an addition to the months list was also found when a pair of  RED LEGGED PARTRIDGES (64) were seen scurrying across one of the paddocks, a species never recorded in August before, bringing the 14 year combined August list to 99.

The Storms passed through around 14:30hrs, so I again had a walk of the sheep pasture and paddocks of Migrant Alley, hoping the heavy down pours and brisk easterly wind had dropped something in, but alas, it was even more quiet than my morning visit, the only birds of note were flyovers from a lone BLACK HEADED GULL and a SWIFT.

After being pleased at seeing so many GREENFINCHES at my garden feeding station yesterday, this morning I witnessed one fall to the SPARROWHAWK, then ealry this afternoon a DUNNOCK went the same way  :-(

Hi Warren.
Thought you might like to know that my LEO turned out to be an Eagle Owl it would seem. This is courtesy of Marianne & Jerry Warne's 'Eagle' eyes. You never know it could turn up at your patch mate!

Phil,
Blimey where did that come from? It didn't look very big in your images!

It was fairly substantial but I believe there is more than one Eagle Owl species, or so I'm told. Presumably this isn't the biggest one!
