Wednesday 14 January 2015

After the initial cloud cleared through around 9:00am, the morning became sunny, but with a chilly westerly wind blowing the warmth of the sun was negated a bit.

I spent 4 hours out on my patch, but didn't find anything new for the months list, there are a few species that still should be added for January, like Canada Goose, Lesser Redpoll and Siskin, maybe Mandarin Duck or Snipe as well if i'm lucky, hopefully they will all visit in the next two weeks.

In the meantime it was a case of recording the regulars and plenty were about this morning, all of the scarcer woodland species were seen, either in the Wet Woods or Scrubby Woods, those being GOLDCREST, NUTHATCH, TREECREEPER, BULLFINCH, LONG TAILED TIT, COAL TIT, JAY, GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER, GREEN WOODPECKER and STOCK DOVE.

No visiting Goosander on the lakes today, or any other visiting wildfowl, just the MALLARDS, MOORHENS, single COOT and the immature MUTE SWAN were present.

A BUZZARD flew over the Ashes Lane Fields, where at least 20 MEADOW PIPITS were also seen. The Greenhouse Grounds was good for seeing the likes of WREN, ROBIN, DUNNOCK, BLACKBIRD, SONGTHRUSH and  PIED WAGTAIL, as well as another 3 Bullfinch and a few GOLDFINCHES.

Out on Migrant Alley it was very much ''as you were'' with 100+BLACK HEADED GULLS, a COMMON GULL, 8 HERRING GULLS, 50+ WOODPIGEON, 60+ JACKDAW, 77 ROOKS and 100+ STARLINGS. Seeing the female KESTREL sitting on a fence line was reassuring, as I haven't seen it for a couple of days  :-)

I spent quite some time trying to get a Treecreeper photo image today, this is the best time of year to do it as there is a bit more light in the woods without all the foliage  :-)

A closer shot might have revealed just what its prey was  :-)

The Treecreepers were with the Long Tailed Tits, as usual, also a Goldrest pair, but I failed to photograph the latter, despite getting some good views of them.

Long Tailed Tit

I took this and the following LTT images yesterday
