Thursday 2 July 2009

This afternoon was even hotter than the past few days, and the humidity was oppressive, therefore I stayed about the house until 18:00hrs, at which time I decided it had just about cooled down enough (and I mean just!) for a visit to the college grounds. I wanted to find the pair of Spotted Flycatchers, and see if I could confirm breeding, and get a few evening photo's of them. On the way I crossed migrant alley - just about! The new gas pipe line was being worked on, and the sections of pipe were being welded together, this means i cant get round them or over them, fortunately the pipe is sat up on blocks, and I can scramble under them!

On arriving at the college grounds I found it still busy, and cars and people were coming and going, this probably contributed to the Spot. fly's not showing at all, shame, but i'll keep trying.

The walk was not without some profit as I added YELLOWHAMMER, GREEN and GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER, KESTREL and 3 LAPWING that flew over, to the months list, these and the SPARROWHAWK I saw this morning, carrying off a poor Long Tailed Tit, take the list into the forties.

Above and below is a Juv. HOUSE SPARROW, a shame I didn't find the spot. flys. The light this evening was perfect for photograhs.
