Wednesday 3 February 2010

As I walked home from work this afternoon, I saw around a hundred FIELDFARE/REDWINGS all feeding on the college sports pitch, and the nearby sheep pasture at Migrant Alley. This however was to be the highlight of the afternoon!

As soon as I left the house at 2pm, a fine drizzle commenced, this got heavier, and a low mist decended, until finally the proper rain set in, an hour later I was back home, I decided cleaning my feeders would be a better use of the afternoon, as I was seeing virtually nothing out on my patch.

I did manage to add GOLDCREST (42) to the months list whilst out, and a pair od GREEN WOODPECKERS provided me with some entertainment as they fed on a large garden lawn next to the Small Holding. The only other things that attracted my attention through the gloom were a few SISKIN and a group of 5 BULLFINCH, both seen at the lakeside scrub. The lake had just six MALLARD on it, but I can't see anything joining them anytime soon, as a gas cannon has been set up in a nearby field, it scares everything (including me!) but doesn't seem to bother the WOODPIGEONS which it is meant to deterr!

Hi Warren,
A goldcrest, cool!!!! You are getting there mate...
To answer your question, at this time of the year I was at 16 species last year... but heye, it does not mean that I will beat the record of 93 species, for that I need to see more than 20 rare species and that's a lot!!!

Warren ,
Sounds like we had identical weather this afternoon .
Do you carry a change of underwear for the gas cannon ?

Excellent to see your Goldcrest record today Warren. I reckon quite a few won't be around anymore following the ice-age we just had, making this sighting even more significant....great stuff!

Hi Warren. well done with the goldcrest, haven't seen one locally for ages. Had a brush with a green woodpecker myself today.

Well done on no 42 - Fieldfares and Redwings on my patch have all moved on to pastures now - no fruit left in the orchards!

We've got one of those darned gas cannons on our local walk Warren, it's a pain in the proverbial!

Your weather was similar to ours :(

No winter Thrushes so far this month for me Warren. Even the Mizzies are avoiding me.
