Tuesday 13 November 2012

It was remarkably mild this afternoon, especially in the brief spells of sunshine that appeared, thus making for a pleasant if very quiet walk over to the lakes.  Only the GREEN WOODPECKERS were of note as I made my way through the Small holding, four had a large garden lawn each to themselves. Walking through the Wet Woods I scanned the tangled mass of sticks and branches that lay across the pools of water, in the hope of finding a Teal, but nothing at all was seen, not even a Moorhen, there was a small mixed flock of LONG TAILED, BLUE and GREAT TITS moving through, but nothing more exciting with them.

I only stayed long enough at the lakes to see there was nothing at all on them apart from a GREY HERON, which flew off as I arrived, I then went over to the Tree Nursery and Greenhouse Grounds for a wander round. The Tree Nursery had the pair of KESTRELS hunting over it, and another Green Woodpecker flew out, plus two MEADOW PIPITS, nothing much else apart from ROBINS, DUNNOCKS, SONGTHRUSH and WRENS were found here

A look around the Greenhouse Grounds was just as quiet, two REDPOLLS and two GOLDCRESTS were seen, a couple of REDWINGS flew from the scrubby area, while overhead SKYLARK and SISKIN were heard, and a flock of 8 FIELDFARE went through, a SPARROWHAWK was up hunting as usual too  :-)

As I walked through the Greenhouse Grounds I took a photo of one of the Kestrels as it sat in a distant Ash tree, then the bonus bird for the day sped by, a PEREGRINE (60) a nice bird to have bring up the 60th species for the month  :-)

Hi Warren :-) It sounds like you had a nicer afternoon than we did, no sun at all here although a little this morning. Well done with the Peregrine and a lovely Kestrel too.

Hi Warren,
I'm so sorry that I've been out of touch. The more I become immersed in this birding trek of ours; the more I can't sleep because of the hunt and finding those birds. This has become an addiction and as much as I love gardening.....birding has taken over my life. I really appreciate your daily accounts and photography. The mornings are very productive....and for the first time, we set a goal of 50 birds in one day and it was exhausting!!! We found 52 but by mid afternoon it was time for a nap. Incredible stuff this birding. I get it now. I totally get it. Thank you for lighting the path.
